Supporting.-In arrangements by which an electric or other lamp is suspended in a central elevated position over a roadway by means which allow it to be lowered to the side of the roadway without interfering with the traffic, the traversing and lowering are accomplished by separate wires. The lamp b is suspended from a carriage a, which is traversed horizontally on a suspension wire by wires d connected to a winding-drum c. The lamp is hung from a pulley e around which passes the rope e<2>, of which one end is secured to the carriage a and the other end either to a point on the wall near the end of the traversing span, or to the drum c. Two drums are provided, one for traversing and the other for elevating, and may be coupled manually or automatically. The connexion between the drums and the actuating-gear may be such that the traversing-drum is uncoupled automatically when the lamp reaches its extreme position.
