Abstract

6967. Dikkers, G. J. O. D. March 20. Fluid-actuated gears; slide valves. - In a fluid-actuated valve gear for a direct-acting steam-engine or steam-pump the distributing - valve is in two parts, in order that the exhaust may be opened to one end of the cylinder before the admission takes place to the other end of the cylinder. The inner valve 1, Fig. 1, is secured to the actuating pistons 2, 3, and is surrounded by a sleeve valve 11 which is free to move between the bosses 12, 37 of the pistons 3, 2. In the position shown steam is passing to the right-hand end of the main cylinder through the space 20 and the passages 22, 23, and also past the end of the sleeve 11 and through a groove 8 and passages 6, 4 in the valve 1 to the cylinder 40, from which it can pass to the main cylinder by passages 24, 25. The valve is about to be reversed by steam supplied through a passage 34, a check valve 35, and passages 36, 33, 32, to the cylinder 41. This steam balances the steam in the cylinder 40 and enables the steam in the space 21 to move the valve to the right. The supply of steam to the right-hand end of the main cylinder is then cut off as the valves enter the space 20. Further movement of the valves uncovers a passage 18 to the left-hand steam passage 19, and enables steam to pass through the groove 10 and passages 7, 5, to the cylinder 41. A groove 12 in the left-hand end of the sleeve 11 is then exposed to steam, which moves the valve 11 in advance of the valve 1, and opens the passage 39 to exhaust through the ports 16. At the completion of the movement of the valves, steam passes to the left-hand end of the main cylinder round the neck of the piston 3, the space 30, and the passages 31, 27. The valve is moved to the left in a similar manner.
