Axial-flow type; balancing moving parts; plant; reversing.-In a marine turbine installation comprising an ahead turbine b, d, f, and an astern turbine m with a common exhaust k, the excess of the axial thrust due to the working fluid over the propeller thrust is balanced by reversing the direction of flow in an intermediate stage d, the high-pressure stages of the ahead and astern turbines being arranged adjacent the ends of the casing or casings so that their stuffing-boxes g, o are easily accessible from the outside. In Fig. 2, the axial thrusts on the drums b, d of the ahead turbine due to the working fluid balance one another ; and the thrust on the third drum f, which is arranged in a separate casing with the astern turbine m, is adapted to balance the propeller thrust. The stuffing-boxes g, i<1>, i<2>, o are easily accessible. The shafts are connected by an axially-movable clutch r. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 25,662/11 and 25,663/11.
