Abstract
6553. Barnier A., and Martin, H. March 17, 1910, [Convention date]. Feeding webs; delivery apparatus; cutting- apparatus.-In an addressing-machine a paper strip passes from a roll 9 over tensioning and looping devices and round an impression cylinder 21, where it is printed on by address type in a galley 26 moving step by step transversely, and by a postmarking-stamp, after which it passes to rotary printing-wheels 22, 22<1>, which print fixed matter, and web-feeding rolls 23, 24 and is finally cut by blades 25 and delivered in suitable lengths printed side up through a guide 95. Means for stopping the machine at the end of a series of addresses, and also when a galley is finished, and for inking the type are described. In the movement of the roller 21 to the right the strip 9 is rolled over one of the addresses in the galley 26 and over the postmarking head 70. During this movement a looping-roller 19 is caused by a weight 16 suspended on a spring band passing over the eccentric 17, to put a tension on the web as it is taken up by the roller 21. The rotary printing wheel 22 carries plates to print fixed matter, such as the name of a magazine, and is driven by gearing from the shaft of the feed roll 23 and at the same peripheral speed. The roll 23 is driven through change-speed gearing from a ratchet-wheel 44 in gear with a rack 43 on the slide 30, so that the paper is fed forward intermittently for a length equal to either a quarter, one half, three quarters, or the whole of the circumference of the roller. After this, a cutter operated by a cam through rod 59, spring 61, lever 58, link 64 and lever 63, and suitably adjusted in position, cuts off the printed wrapper, which slides down the slide 95. If desired, the cutting-mechanism may be rendered idle, and the printed strip rolled up for future use. On the right-hand side of the galley 26 a pin is fixed at such a point that, when the addresses have all been printed, it engages a pivoted lever and turns a shaft which releases a trigger and thereby operates a clutch 35, thus stopping the machine. On the lefthand side of the galley 26 is placed a wooden strip bearing pins which engage a second pivoted lever, by which the clutch is also operated as before, and also a bell, indicating that the last of a certain series of addresses has been printed. A tab N may then be pasted on this slip and the machine is re-set by hand.
