719,150. Feeding webs; printing processes. ADDRESSOGRAPH - MULTIGRAPH CORPORATION. March 27, 1952 [April 6, 1951], No. 7871/52. Classes 100 (1) and 100 (2). [Also in Group VIII] A web advancing unit includes a guide surface over which a web withdrawn from a roll of paper, cardboard or the like may be directed, a device for imparting an intermittent advancing movement to the web, and between the guide and advancing device, a further device in frictional engagement with the web and effective to maintain the web under tension. As shown, a web W to be made into punched, printed cards is led off a roll R and under a roll 82 mounted on a pivoted lever 81. The web roll is mounted on uprights 68 having arms 69 connected thereto which may be rocked by a handle 70. The spindle 73 rests on rollers 71, 72 carried by the arms 69. As the. web is drawn forward through the machine the roller 82 is raised so that when the lever 81 is horizontal a mercury switch MS thereon causes energization of a motor 75 to rotate the web roll R so that the roller 82 is again lowered. The web then passes under a roller 90 and over a guide surface 103 mounted on arm 92 and urged by springs 104 against the web so as to maintain it under tension.' The web then passes over a bar 94 and under a spring-urged bar 97 carrying a felt or similar pad 99. Eccentrics 100 are provided for urging the bar 97 away from the bar 94 to facilitate initial motion of the web W. The arms 92 are mounted on castings 88 between which is mounted a casting 106 having slots 107, 108 formed therein. Blocks 109 including pins are mounted for sliding movement in the slot 107 and carry punching members each operated by the action of a cam 119 on a head 116. The cam 119 is operated by an arm 124 fast on a shaft 120 and oscillated from an arm 127 eccentrically connected to a continuously rotating shaft 35 on which is mounted an impression cylinder 26 which co-operates with a printing cylinder 25 to which the punched web is fed under a rod 58. The printing cylinder 25 is inked from an ink fountain 37 including a roller 38. Roller 38 has a small movement imparted thereto by a pawl and ratchet mechanism 42, 43 operated by an arm 41 eccentrically secured to an extension of the shaft 32 of the printing cylinder 25. A ductor roller 56 is mounted on an arm 59 to which is connected an arm 62, having a roller 63 mounted thereon which co-operates with a cam 64 mounted on the shaft 32. Further inking rollers 45, 46, 47 are provided the roller 47 being mounted for longitudinally reciprocating movement. After printing the web passes over rollers 128 mounted on one arm of bell-crank levers pivoted at 136 the other arms 137 of which are urged in a clockwise direction by springs 143. Rollers 128 coact with a segment 146 secured to a main continuously driven shaft 23. The shaft 23 drives through. gears 28, 30, 31, the shaft 32, at the other end of which are gears 33, 34 driving shaft 35 and gears driving the inking rollers. As the segment 146 coacts with the rollers 128 a forward movement is imparted to the web equal to the length of one of the cards to be cut therefrom. The apparatus is so arranged that printing takes place during the forward movement of the web and punching during the stationary period. A further feed roller 130 is at the time of this movement of the web stationary and the slack is taken up by a roller 129 on a bell-crank 152 pivoted at 136. The arm 157 of the bell-crank 152 carries a roller 159 following a cam 155 which is shaped to cause appropriate movement of the roller 129 at the right time and maintain the tension in the web. When the segment 146 is inoperative the roller 130 is rotated to cause feeding of the web. A gear 162 is mounted on the end of the shaft of the roller 130 through the medium of a brake and one-way. clutch. The gear 162 co-operates with a gear segment 163 oscillated through a link 167 connected to an adjustable eccentric mounted on the shaft 23. A plurality of rollers 131 are -spring-urged against the roller 130. The cutting mechanism comprises a fixed block 191 and co-operating movable blade 192 mounted on an arm 194. The arm 194 is connected to one arm of a bell-crank lever 196 the other arm of which carries a roller 199 co-operating with a cam 200 on the shaft 23. The cutter is operative during the feed of the web by the segment 146. The cards are conveyed away by tape T. When it is only desired to cut cards from the web the punching, printing mechanism and first feed mechanism 146 are omitted.
