Abstract
The continuous wrapper web (4) used in the making of cigarette filter rods has spaced indicia (M) printed on it as it passes between a printing roller (10) and a co-operating pressure roller (11). A spring urges the roller (10) towards the roller (11) thus causing the web (4) to be gripped therebetween; the rollers (10, 11) are rotated by reason of the web (4) being pulled along between them. Ink is fed to the roller (10) from a duct (21) via a steel roller (20) and a transfer roller (18) having a raised rubber band (19). The roller (20) is belt driven from the printing roller (10) and roller (18) is frictionally driven from roller (20). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Printing apparatus
This invention concerns improvements in or relating to printing apparatus, and particularly to the printing of identifying indicia to the paper wrapper of rod shaped articles of the tobacco industry.
It is common in cigarette making machines, when printing indicia at intervals on a continuous web, for the roller which applies the inked pattern to the web to be driven at the same speed as the web via a gear train. Thus the inked pattern is applied at a fixed distance from the end of each cigarette.
The present invention is concerned with applying identification marks to the web used to form filter rods. Such marks will be hidden under the usual cork-like tipping paper in the completed filter cigarettes and therefore do not need to be timed in relation to the ends of the filter rods.
According to the present invention there is provided apparatus for printing indicia on a continuous wrapper web used in the manufacture of filter rods, comprising a printing roller for engaging one side of said web to print said indicia at spaced locations along said web, means to transfer ink from a supply means to said printing roller, a pressure roller for engaging the other side of said web opposite said printing roller, mounting means on which said printing and said pressure rollers are freely rotatable, and means for causing said printing and said pressure rollers to grip said web therebetween and provide a driving connection between said web and said printing roller whilst said web is moving.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic front view of a machine for making cigarette filter rods, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of part of
Fig. 1 drawn to a larger scale.
Referring to Fig. 1, a continuous stream 1 of material suitable for making cigarette filter rods is fed, in known manner, from a supply means 2 towards a device 3 (commonly called a garniture) of known construction in which the filter material is wrapped in an outer wrapper of paper fed as a continuous web 4 from a bobbin 5, the web 4 being sealed along its edges whilst passing through the device 3.
The web 4 is pulled from the bobbin 5 by the device 3 in the usual manner. After emerging from the device 3 the wrapped rod 6 is cut into predetermined lengths 7 in a cut-off unit 8 and delivered to a collecting apparatus which forms no part of the present invention.
Referring now also to Fig. 2, between the bobbin 5 and the device 3, the web 4 has an identification mark or code M printed on it at regular spaced locations by a printing unit 9.
The unit 9 comprises a printing roller 10 and a pressure roller 11 between which the web is pulled by the device 3. The printing roller 10 is made of steel and carries a forme F of the mark M- to be printed on the web 4. The pressure roller 11 is made of a resilient material, such as polyurethane, and the roller 10 is provided with two steel "tyres" 12, one one each side of the forme F. Alternatively the tyres 12 may be made of a resilient material. The roller 10 is freely- mounted for rotation on a shaft 13 and the roller 11 is simiarly mounted on a shaft 14. The shaft 13 is journalled in a plate 15 which is pivoted at 16 to a further plate 17 attached to a fixed part of the machine, the roller 11 being journalled in the plate 17.A spring (not shown) extends between the shafts 13, 14 so as to swing the plate 15 clockwise about the pivot 16 and urge the roller 10 towards the roller 11, thus causing the web 4 to be gripped between the roller 11 and the tyres 12. The arrangement is such that the rollers 10, 11 are continuously rotated as the web 4 is pulled through the nip of rollers 10, 11 by the device 3, and on each revolution of roller 10 a mark M is printed on the web 4.
Ink is applied to the forme F by a transfer roller 18 which picks up ink, on a central raised rubber band 19, from a steel duct roller 20 which, in turn, receives ink from an ink duct 21 loosely carried on a shaft 22 fixed in the plate 15. Ink is supplied to the duct 21 from a reservoir (not shown) via a pipe 23.
The position of the duct 21 relative to the roller 20, so as to control the thickness of the layer of ink received by duct roller 20, is adjusted by means of a screw 24 mounted in a block 25 also fixed to plate 15.
The duct roller 20 is driven from the printing roller 10 by means of a toothed belt (not shown) and the transfer roller 18 is frictionally driven by duct roller 20. Thus the motive power for driving the rollers 10, 11, 18 and 20 is created by the web 4 being pulled along by the device 3. As the marks M will not, in the final filter cigarette, be visible to the smoker, exact positioning of the mark on the web 4 is not necessary. The only requirement to ensure that at least one mark M appears on each short length 7, is that the pitch of the marks M should be less than the length of a length 7.
The plate 15 can be swung anti-clockwise about pivot 16 so that the roller 10 is moved away from roller 11 to an "off" position, and held there, by, for example, a catch (not shown). This provides access for maintenance and, if required, enables roller 10 to be replaced by one having a different forme so as to print a different mark on the web 4. Before the machine shown in Fig. 1 is started the printing unit may be held in the "off" position by means of the catch mentioned above, the catch being released when it is desired to print marks M on the web 4.
In a modified arrangement (not shown) two further rubber transfer rollers, are provided, one between the duct roller 20 and transfer roller 18, and the other between transfer roller 18 and the printing roller 10. In this case, rubber bank 19 on transfer roller 18 is formed as an integral part of roller 18 and thus made of steel. Again, drive to the extra rollers is frictional, from roller 20.
In a further modification the roller 10 is fitted with a free-wheel device (not shown) to prevent it from rotating in the wrong direction.
