Processes.-Consists in ornamenting plates of glass, metal, &c. by pressing a plastic mass, such as paint, gypsum, or clay, between two plates and then separating the plates, the ornamentation being caused by the mass adhering irregularly to the two surfaces. The plastic mass may be in one or more colours and consistencies, and the plates when pressed together may be given various movements, and may be separated uniformly or from one edge or corner. By varying the conditions, many fantastic effects are produced. Apparatus is described for pressing the plates together and giving them suitable movements and separating them in a suitable manner. The ornamented plates may be used as decorative objects, or as printing-surfaces directly, or as pattern plates from which printing-surfaces are prepared by casting or by a galvano-plastic process. The design may be fixed on to the plate by etching. In a modification, the lower plate is a plastic mass, such as molten glass or metal, clay, celluloid, wood pulp, gypsum, majolica, or artificial marble, and the fantastic design is formed directly on the surface of this mass. In a further modification, the surface of a solid plate is rendered plastic by chemicals or by heat.
