Heating water; feed-water, heating. - In direct - contact apparatus of the ' tray ' type, groups of trays I with separate water-supply connexions are arranged at different levels in the steam space in such manner that the water from the upper trays does not fall on to the lower trays. The upper trays are supplied with Water from the boxes J connected by pipes L<2>, L<1>, L with the box K and the main supplypipe F. A branch L<3> from the box K is connected by pipes L<4> with the boxes J of the lower trays. The upper trays are wider than the lower.
