Abstract

191,052. Groll, C. Dec. 27, 1921, [Convention date]. Air supply, regulating.-Hinged dampers 22, Fig. 3, connected by a rod 23, are closed by the opening of the furnace door and subsequently opened when the door is closed, being allowed to close gradually under the control of cataract mechanism. The dampers are connected by a chain 24 to a long counterweight 9, Figs. 1 and 2. By opening the furnace door, a chain 1 is operated to raise a slide 2 connected by tackle 6 and a link 21 to the counterweight 9, which is also raised and allows the dampers 22 to close. The cataract bell 7 is raised by a chain 14 and actuates, through a connecting-rod and bell-crank lever 16, a link 17, and thus allows a stepped cam mounted in a frame 11 to be pushed forward by. a balance weight 12 to engage with a projection 10 on a counterweight 4 which rises with the slide 2. Upon closing the door, the slide 2 falls and allows the counterweight 9 to fall and open the dampers 22. The bell of the cataract falls slowly and withdraws the stepped cam from engagement with the projection 10, thus allowing the weight 4 to fall and close the damper by means of the chain 18 and rod 20. The steps of the cam are formed by thin strips which are adjustable to vary the time of closing of the damper.
