A cover 2 is secured over the top of the fire pot and is provided with an enlarged opening 3 in the top thereof, through which fuel may be introduced into the interior of the stove. A door 31 preferably closes this fuel opening 3 duringthc' 'uselof the stove. The cover 2j'has downwardly extending flanges 4 therein, as shown inFig. 6, and a permanent baflie plate 5 is 'securedfwithin the cover 2by means of bolts 6, which'exte id through the baffle plate 5 and the flanges'4l. In the operation of the stove, the damper 9 may be properly regulated to burn either soft or hard coal. The damp-er is preferably closed to reduce the draft for burning hard coal but open to provide a direct draft to the smoke outlet 14, when soft coal is burned, this being regulated by the control handle 11. In burning hard coal, the draft will be indirect or over the edge of the baffle plate 5 through the opening 21 into the chamber 18, thence to the smoke outlet 14.. The damper may also be regulated and properly adjusted to off-set an unusually long or short length of smoke stack; or in tlie case of a high wind, the closing of the damper prevents a burning out of a fire pot full. of soft coal.
When the damper (not shown), which is used. to close the fresh air inlet 13 in the head 12, is open, fresh air is admitted into the chamber 17 from Where it is forced to pass through the opening 20 over the edge of the baffle plate 5 into the top of the fire pot, after which it may be drawn out to the smoke outlet 14 either through the opening 21 or the smoke Opening 8. This fresh air is prevented from passing directly from the fresh air inlet to the smoke outlet by use of the wall 16 and the flange 19.
In this way, the stove is adaptable for burning either soft or hard coal and an accurate control is maintained over the draft at all. times. The construction is simple and easily controllable and effective for the advantages mentioned.
I claim:

The combination. of a stove head having fresh air inlet and smoke outlet, a wall connected with the head and dividing it into air and smoke chambers, a baffle plate associated with the head and cooperating therewith to approximately close said chambers. 2. The combination of a stove head having fresh air inlet and smoke outlet, a wall con nected with the head and dividing it into air and'smoke chambers, a baffle plate as sociated with the head and cooperating therewith to approximately close said. chambers, said baffle plate having a smoke opening therethrough and a damper for regulatmg said opening. 7

The combination of a stove fire pot, a cover connected therewith, a baffle plate fixed in the cover, a head mounted upon the cover and having fresh air inlet and smoke outlet, a wall connected with the head and dividing it into air and smoke chambers, communicating with the fire pot over the edge of the baflle plate, said baflle plate havmg a smoke opening therethrough communieating with the smoke chamber," and "a damper for regulating said smoke opening.
4.
