Abstract

29,497. Winterling, C. Dec. 19. Type - lever machines. - Relates to syllablewriting machines wherein logotype-levers are provided for writing syllables and the letterspacing mechanism is arranged to give a space corresponding to the number of types on the lever which is operated. Type - lever actions; keyboards. - The typelevers 14 are pivoted at 16, 16 in segments 2, 2, the levers with one type being arranged in the middle of the segments and the logotypelevers being arranged at the sides of the segments. The key-stems 25 each operate a bellcrank lever 24 which is connected by a link 23 to a bell-crank lever 22, this being connected by a link 21 to a rocker 19 which is connected by a link 18 to the heel of the type-lever. The rockers are each formed with a rounded surface 34, Fig. 11, adapted to roll on a support 3, the variable fulcrum enabling the key to work with greater mechanical advantage at the beginning than at the end of the key-stroke. The series of rockers are mounted between comb-teeth on the support 3, and are held against displacement by a rod 36 which passes through the teeth and through elongated holes 35 in the rockers. Returning-springs 31 are arranged between lugs 19 on the rockers and adjusting- screws 32. The levers 22, 24 are pivoted in radially adjustable hangers 27 having cylindrical heads which fit in holes in a support 7 and are engaged by screws 29. The hangers are adjusted to bring each pair of levers 22, 24 into the same plane, the screws 29 engaging the support 7 rather loosely so as to permit the adjustment to be made without detaching the screws. To render the arrangement compact the levers 22 are arranged in two rows instead of side by side, the front row of levers being connected to long rockers and the back row to short rockers. The keyboard is arranged so that the keys for the ordinary type-levers are disposed in the upper banks and the keys for the logotype-levers are in the lower banks; further two space-bars 47, 48 are provided, the spacebar 48 being arranged in the middle of the keyboard to facilitate fingering. The links 23 of the syllable keys cross under the links 23 of the ordinary keys, the stepped arrangement of the levers 22, 24 affording the necessary clearance. Alining for impression.-The aliner consists of a plate 10 formed with crossing slots 38, 39 which are respectively adapted to engage the single-type heads and the logotype-heads. To ensure accurate alinement, the type-heads 42 are mounted in the known manner to have lateral play on the type-levers. The mounting consists of a type - head socket 40 which is pivoted at 44 between side cheeks on the typelever, and is formed with an elongated slot to receive a pin 46 connecting the side cheeks. Letter-spacing mechanism.-The type - levers 14 are formed with lugs, such as 37,37, adapted to engage universal bars 9, 9, 9 which are arranged to give a one, two, or three-letterspace movement to the carriage-escapement according to the combination of bars selected by the type-lever.
