Printing-surfaces.-In preparing a design on a lithographic surface, an inked typographic plate is first pressed on the surface, and the design thus transferred is covered with an hygroscopic film by drying thereon a mixture of water, dextrine, and candied sugar. A solvent such as benzine is then used to wash away the printing-ink and the hygroscopic film covering it, leaving the surface clear at those parts originally covered by the ink. A sensitive film composed of turpentine, wax, bitumen, and essence of lavender is then spread over the surface, after which the hygroscopic film is washed away in warm water leaving the sensitive film on the surface in the required design. This film is then preferably hardened by exposure to light, and inked up. Instead of the sensitive film, a film of rubber, benzine, turpentine, and colouring-matter may be used.
