27,051. Ransford, R. B., [Cassella & Co., L.]. Nov. 21. Indophenols are obtained by condensing carbazole-1-carboxylic acid or its esters with pnitrosophenol or its homologues in presence of sulphuric acid; leuco compounds are formed by reduction of these indophenols. Sulphuretted dyes are obtained by heating the above-described indophenols or their leuco compounds with alkali polysulphide in presence of solvents, such as water, alcohol, &c. with or without addition of copper salts; or the leucoindophenols may be heated with sulphur. The products may be used in sulphide baths or in hydrosulphite vats; blue to black shades are thus obtained. Carbazole-1-carboxylic acid is obtained by heating carbazole and caustic potash in a current of carbon dioxide; its esters are obtained by means of the alcohols and hydrochloric acid gas.
