Trimming and spreading apparatus.-Relates to conveying-mechanism for trimming coal &c. in ships' bunkers and in like places, and consists, firstly, in the provision of special scrapers 16, Fig. 1, arranged at intervals between the ordinary scrapers 4 for trimming the spaces between the vertical deck beams 6 and other obstacles; and, secondly, of means for starting a second conveyer from a first conveyer when the space beneath the first conveyer is filled up, and for stopping the second conveyer. The scrapers 16 are wider than the scrapers 4, and are pivotally connected at 15 to the chain, and are under the influence of spring push-rods 19. Cams 23 prevent shock to the scrapers 16. In a modification, the scrapers are pivoted to a crossbar, and are provided with extensions which are connected by a spring. In a further modification, the scrapers have arms which run in a cam-guide. Figs. 7 and 8 show the arrangement of the two conveyers. The second conveyer 3 is driven from the first through a clutch, the sliding member 47 of which is operated by a fork 54 on a sliding spring- controlled rod 51. When the space beneath the conveyer 5 is filled up, a special pivoted scraper 85 is swung aside to raise a pin 79 formed on the chain. The pin 79 engages a trip lever 77, which releases a detent 65 from a collar 59 on the rod 51 and allows the clutch to engage under the influence of the spring 62. A similar pin 86 is provided on the conveyer 3, which engages a trip lever 88 when the space beneath is filled up. The lever 88 withdraws detents 69, 71 on each side of the spring 62, and the clutch is disengaged. The lever 77 may be tripped by an abutment on a star-wheel, the arms of which are engaged by the pin 79. With this arrangement, the conveyer 5 can make several complete traverses prior to the operation of the clutch member 47.
