Description

C. E. HARRIS May 2, 1939.
WRENCH Filed Aug. 2, 1957 ITLVETL t E11" Clarence E-HE1"1"1E At t1: r'n E Patented May 2, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WRENCH 1 Claim.
(Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as
amended April 30, 1928; 370 0. G. 757) The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for govermnental purposes, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
The subject of this invention is a wrench.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a wrench for a special situation in which there is not sufiicient space to apply a large force to turn the wrench.
10 The invention consists in providing a wrench with a pivotally mounted extension having a plurality of selectively engageable members on which to apply the force of a lever.
Several embodiments of the invention are illus- 15 trated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a view of a structure having a limited space and showing the employment of the wrench forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail view in side elevation of the 20 wrench.
Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation.
Fig. 4 is a view of a chain-type extension.
Referring to Fig. 1 there is shown a structure which is part of the recuperator mechanism of a 25 gun and which includes a member 5 which is to be secured by a plurality of nuts or bolts 6 of some of which are so located that the space for operation of a wrench l is exceedingly restricted.
According to thisinvention, the wrench is provided with an extension, which, in the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3, consists of a rigid bar 8 which is connected to the handle of the wrench by means of a pivot pin 9. The greater portion of the bar 5 is in the shape of a ladder, the openings I0 providing for passage of a rod 1 I and the crosspieces 12 adapted to be engaged by the rod. The rod is used as a lever, with one end. engaging one of the bolts 6 which serves as a fulcrum, and in this 10 manner a considerable force may be exerted on the crosspieces I2 to eifect turning of the Wrench.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the extension is a flexible member such as a chain l3 of open links which are straddled by the bifurcated 15 end of a rod 14 and which supply the surface on which the rod may act.
I claim:
A wrench including a handle with a work-engaging end, a pivot pin in the end of the handle 0 opposite to the work-engaging end, and a rigid member mounted on the pivot pin, said member having a plurality of openings and crosspieces for application of a lever and arranged parallel to the axis of the pivot pin and remote from the 25 work-engaging end of the handle.
CLARENCE E. HARRIS.
