Abstract

23,954. Hopper, F. Oct. 17. Brake mechanism. - In a cycle roller-lever brake mechanism, the lever is connected by an arm or extension 4 to a sliding or rising and falling member 10, arranged within the interior of the handle - bar stem and carrying a projecting arm 16, which extends through and works within a slot in the stem, and is connected to an external brake-rod 18. As shown in Fig. 1, a relief spring 12 is arranged within the stem, and is secured at one end to the sliding member and at its lower end to a part 13, 14 removably fitted within the stem. The arm 16 is secured in a recess or slot 19 in the part 10 by a wedge 21 driven through the lower part of the slot. A hole closed by a screw 23 facilitates the removal of the wedge. To operate both a front and a rear brake from two roller levers, a pair of D-section sliding pieces are arranged in the stem, each piece being connected to a relief spring within the stem and to a rearwardly-extending arm upon the corresponding roller lever, and each being provided with a forwardly-projecting arm passing through a separate slot in the stem. In order that both of the brake - rods may be central, one of the forwardly-projecting arms is made shorter than the other, and to provide a clearance for a bolt screwing into a stem-expanding block or nut, the D-shaped pieces may be grooved upon their inner faces, the relief springs being connected at their lower ends to the block. Screws passing through the handlebar to engage grooves in the levers prevent endlong movement, and an opening at the top of the handle-bar lug is provided for mounting the arms upon the levers. Instead of using a tension spring in the stem a torsion spring surrounding the roller lever and concealed within the bearing-sleeve in the handle-bar may be provided. The sliding piece may be solid, and for two brakes, one piece may carry a forwardlyprojecting arm, and the other an arm projecting through the side of the stem. According to the Provisional Specification, the arm upon the rolling lever may be attached to the sliding piece by a transverse key or wedge driven through the upper portion of the slot in the sliding piece.
