Jib cranes.-Loading and discharging apparatus for ships comprises a series of rotary jib cranes with their posts arranged at the longitudinal sides of the hatchways, and the rotary platforms holding the posts in a vertical position are provided with slueing-winches, the ropes from which pass round guide-pulleys and are secured to fixed points. The crane-post a is mounted in a foot-step bearing i in a chamber h beneath the deck, and is prevented from tilting by a rotary platform d with rollers e running on a plate e<1> secured to the deck. Slueing is effected by a double-drum winch n<1> mounted on the platform, the ropes from which pass round guide-sheaves p, and are secured to a fixed part of the ship. In a modified form of crane, the footstep bearing i is replaced by a second rotary platform running on rollers on the floor of the chamber h. The slueing-winch is mounted on the lower platform and the ropes therefrom are passed round a drum on the crane-post. Cranes are arranged at opposite sides of each hatchway, the posts being in line with the coamings c, which are diverted to surround the turntables.
