Abstract

1486858 Loading ships by a platform elevator; container traffic; mobile elevator MACGREGOR INTERNATIONAL SA 21 Feb 1975 [22 Feb 1974] 7391/75 Headings B8E B8L and B8Q A platform or other elevator apparatus 14 on a ship 1 has platforms 25, 26 raisable and lowerable in upper guides 21, 22 and lower guides 34, 35 by winches 30, 31. The guides 21, 22, are mounted on a base 12 by a shaft 15 about which the housing 16 can be rotated. The base 12 and all that is mounted on it can be pivoted from the operative position Fig. 1 by a jack 42 to a horizontal position, Fig. 2 below a hatch cover 11. The upper part 35b of the guide 35 moves with the base 12 while the guide 34 is pivoted about a trunnion 37 to the inboard position shown. In other embodiments the apparatus, Fig. 6, may be pivotally mounted on a carriage 335 running on a track 343 to be positioned opposite guides 334, 335 of different holds or may be lifted between an operative pivot base block and an inoperative block below deck. In some examples the outer guide 334 may be permanently fixed in a recess 361, Fig. 6, in the ship's side 2 or may be fixed externally of the side. With upper guides thwartship, Fig. 1, and in line with the lower guides the outer guides are located outside the ship so that the outer platform 26 can be lowered to a stop 38 to pick up a pallet or other article or container from a pier 46 while the inner platform 25 can be lowered to pick up or deposit goods on any deck 3-5. With both platforms raised on to the upper guides the apparatus can be rotated about the axis 13 to allow the platforms 25, 26 to transfer their loads to the desired position on the pier or in the ship. Safety devices prevent operations occurring when any part is in an incorrect position such as turning the apparatus 14 when either platform is on a lower guide.
