Abstract

22,535. Bond, E. S., and Lee, C. Sept. 29. [Cognate Application, 29,020/10.] Locking - apparatus; supports.-In means for preventing unauthorized riding of motor and other cycles, of the kind wherein a locking-bolt 4 adapted to engage with the crank axle or other part of the driving- mechanism is carried by an internal movable sleeve which co-operates with rotatable locking- collars 8 for retaining the bolt in operative position, the bolt is pushed down into this position by means of a collar 8<a> completely encircling the frame tube or the casing enclosing the sleeve. As shown in Fig. 1, a collar 2 upon the crank axle 1 is furnished with a number of grooves or recesses 3, so that, for supporting the machine, a crank may be locked in a position suitable to the height of the kerb. The connexion between the collar 8<a> and the sleeve may be effected by a screw engaging a bayonetslot in the frame tube, and the device may be arranged in either the tube 9 or 16. For locking the driving-wheel, a casing enclosing the sleeve is supported from the wheel axle and a back-fork member, and a disk with two or more projections between which the locking-bolt may engage may be secured to the hub. To allow for the adjustment of the chain, the upper extremity of the casing may be connected to the machine by means permitting of up or down movement, as by using a rotatable eccentric. In applying the device to existing machines. a slotted rectangular member 28, Fig. 5, is clamped to the spokes by means of plates 30, a screw or the like 32 retaining the member laterally in the position permitted by the space between the stays and the hub flange. To provide for vertical and lateral adjustment, the bottom end of the casing is connected to an arm upon the axle by means of an horizontal and a vertical screw. The letters, figures, or the like upon the rotatable collars may be stamped upon straight strips of sheet metal, which are applied to, and soldered in position on, the collars. According to the Provisional Specification, the locking-bolt is pressed into operative position by a tappet connexion with the sleeve.
