Abstract
22,510. Merkham Trading Co., and Harris, G. H. Sept. 28. Mud-guards.-Relates to means for attaching mud - guards to cycles &c. The rear wheel mud-guard c is provided with keyhole slots a, b, secured to the fork bridges f, h by means of studs d fitted with nuts e, e<1>, g, g<1> and a spring i, Fig. 1. The slot for the stud in the upper fork bridge f is longer than the slot for the stud in the lower bridge h, in order that the upper spring stud may have traversed a portion of its slot before the lower hole in the guard can be threaded over the head g of its stud. Washers l with a hook-shaped projection m, Figs. 7 and 8, are secured on the wheel spindle, and the mud-guard stays at the spindle end are formed with a circle or loop n fitting either round the spindle nut or on a grooved stud o integral with the washer l, the hook m being so formed that the stay is under a slight transverse strain when the mud-guard is in position. For the attachment of the front-wheel mudguard to the forks, a slotted cup r, Fig. 5, is fitted in the end of the tube g, and a spring stud d is fitted in the cup, a projection or tail t for operation by the finger in detaching the guard being secured to the lower end of the stud. The rear guard washer l may be formed with a second projection of quadrant shape, for the attachment of the dress-guard in ladies' cycles, and the mud-guard may be perforated with eyelet holes on either side for the reception of the dress-guard hooks.
