VEHICLE-SADDLE.
Application filed May 12, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Lee A. BnIenL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cheviot, in the county of Hamilton and State of Uhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Saddles, of which the following is a specification.
lit-Ty invention relates to improvements in saddles for bicycles, and similar toys. One of its objects is to provide a saddle of stamped sheet metal with provisidn for ad justing and attaching it firmly to a saddle post. Another object is to provide an improved form of saddle adapted to be stamped from sheet metal with provision for attaching it to a saddle post. Another object is to provide improved means to attach the saddle to a saddle post. My invention also comprises certain details of form, combination and arrangement, all of which will be fully set forth in the description of the aceompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved saddle attached to a saddle post.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged central vertical section through the same.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 is a view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating a modification.
Fig. 5 is a sectional. detail illustrating a modification of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view illustrating another modification.
Fig. 7 is a sectional detail illustrating a modification.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred embodiments of my invention in which A. represents a saddle stamped from sheet metal with a raised horn 2 a seat portion 3 and av raised rim d at the rear of the seat portion. A boat shaped depression 13 is provided at the center with openings at opposite ends to receive the upper horizontal section 5 of the seat post D. When the shank 5 is in position in the depression B, the bottom 6 of said depression is below the shank 5, and said shank may be clamped down by means of a nut 7 and bolt 8 passing through the shank 5 and through a perforation 9 in section 6 to lock the saddle to the seat post as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, or an eye bolt 20, washers 23 and 2 1 and nut 22 may be employed as illustrated in Fig. 5 to lock the seat post to the saddle. As illustrated in Fig. 4 a set screw 1.0 and nut 11 are employed to engage the under face of shank Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2%, 1917.
Serial No. eases.
5 to lock the seat post to the saddle. As illus rated in Fig. -l thenut 11 is prevented from turning by the side walls of the depression l3.
its illustrated in Fig. l the face of the saddle may be provided with a leather facing 12 secured thereto by a suitable adhesive material.
The depending rim or apron 14L insures great strength and rigidity and prevents the saddle being forced out of shape, and enables the strain to be transmitted from the saddle to the saddle post without changing the shape of the saddle.
As illustrated in Fig. 6 stud bolts 15 are welded or otherwise secured to the under face of the saddle and a spring 16 is clamped by means oi nuts 1.7 to the stud bolts 15 to enable a saddle post to be secured to the arms of spring 16 and said spring interposed between the saddle and saddle post, where a spring is desired.
I prefer to form the saddle in one piece by stamping, but as indicated in Fig. 7 the depressed portion B may be separately formed and subsequently attached by welding or rivets, which under certain circumstances might be desirable.
If desired the washer 24 illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5 may have one edge bent upwardly along the side of the depressed portion B and the other side bent downwardly to lock the nut T or 22 in place.
if desired the shank 5 of the seat post may be slightly curved as indicated in Fig. 4t which will enable the saddle to be adjusted to various positions of inclination. to suit the rider.
The mechanism herein illustrated and described is capable of considerable modifica tion without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A. one piece sheet metal saddle comprising a seat, a horn, a depending marginal apron, a centrally located depressed. portion perforated at opposite ends to receive a substantially horizontal section of a saddle post, and means to rigidly clamp a saddle post to said depressed portion of the saddle.
2. A vehicle saddle having a seat, a horn, and a centrally located depressed portion provided with perforations at opposite ends to receive and be guided upon a substantially horizontal section of a seat post, said saddle being formed from sheet metal in one piece.
A sheet metal vehicle saddle having a seat, a horn, a centrally located depressed portion provided with perforations at opposite ends to receive and be guided upon a saddle post, a depending marginal apron, and means to rigidly secure a saddle post to said depressed portion of the saddle.
4. A sheet'metal vehicle saddle having a seat, a horn, a centrally located depressed portion provided with perforations at oppo- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for site ends thereof to receive a saddle post and guide the saddle thereon a depending marginal apron, and a bolt and nut to rigidly secure said saddle to a saddle post passing through said perforations and depressed portion of the saddle.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
