Abstract

21,666. Tippett, E. Sept. 17. Percussive drills.-In a percussive rock drill, the bit is formed with a longitudinal passage having a lateral outlet through which the sludge and water are ejected by the piston-like action of the bit on its passage into the hole. As shown, the bit 1 has a central passage 2 with a rearwardly inclined lateral outlet 5 beyond the end of the bore-hole. The cutting end of the bit may be slightly tapered at 9 to keep the ends of the cutting-edges 8 sharp. In a modification, the passage 2 extends entirely through a bit, and a lateral outlet is provided in the chuck of the drill. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 3000/63, 13,996/90, and 23,162/98, [all in Class 85, Mining &c.].
