Cutting -out.- Dress sections are cut by the aid of a chart of the kind which is shaped to an out-size and is provided with scales at its edges and at critical points to enable the desired points to be pricked on to a paper pattern, these points being joined by using the edges of the chart as a ruler. According to the invention, the critical points of the chart are arranged in two groups, and, after drawing a base line and pricking off one group of points, a measurement is made along the base line, whereupon the chart is replaced in a new position and the second group of points marked off; these points are then joined by the edges of the chart, which serves as a ruler, no intermediate scales being used for indicating the crucial points. Fig. 1 shows a chart for a half-back section of a blouse. The base edge a, b has two scales n, g graduated in accordance with collar and under-arm seam measurements respectively. Waist measurements are indicated on a scale h, and intersecting lines are drawn from the points on the scales g, h parallel to the waist-line and centre back-line a, b respectively. Scales p, m are drawn from the points e, d corresponding to bust measurements, and a scale o is provided at f graduated according to collar measurements. A scale q, graduated according to centre back measurements between the armholes, may be provided to give a check point. In use, the chart is placed on a sheet of paper or other material, a pencil is run along the line a, b to give a base line, and the points k, l, m are marked off according to the measurements required. The chart is then removed, and the length from neck to waist of the person to be fitted is marked off on a b. The chart is then replaced, the upper extremity of this measurement being coincident with the proper graduation of the scale n, and the points o, p are pricked off. The check point q is marked, if desired, and all the points are then joined by means of the corresponding edges of the chart. Fig. 2 shows a chart for a half-front section, the points being arranged in groups k, l, m and o, p as before. The scale m is in this case on the neck line a, f, and, after removing the chart and measuring along a b as base line on the material, the point a is placed at the upper end of this line. For drawing in a dart, scales s graduated according to waist measurements are provided to give points x, y, and a chart, Fig. 6, is laid so that its edge t u lies along the line k, l with the points v, w equidistant from the points x, y. The point z is obtained from a scale 2, graduated according to under-arm seam measurements.
