SKIRT-MEASURING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARY C. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Perth Amboy, in the county of Middlesex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt- Measuring Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in dressmaking devices and has particular reference to the provision of a device for drafting the gores of ladies skirts.

The object of the invention resides in the provision of a measuring device adapted to be associated with a suitable chart setting forth the different dimensions of gores for different sizes of skirts sothat a person can with the aid of the chart and measuring device draft the outline of gores for any size of skirt and for skirts having any number of gores.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of such a device which is simple in structure and which may therefore be easily and efficiently operated.

A specific object of the invention resides in the provision of means for drafting the waist line curve of twoor three-gored skirts.

l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts to be more fully hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

' Reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view of the device in position for marking the dimensions of the gore of a five gore skirt, Fig. 2 is a View showing the means for obtaining the edge outline of a five-gore skirt, Fig. Sis a view showing the means of obtaining the waist line curve of. a skirt having two or three gores, and Fig. i is a sectional view on the line 4'l of Fig. 1.

body portion of the device, which is in the shape of a gore of a skirt having one of its edges 6 straight from the bottom to a point adjacent the top, from whence it curves in to provide the waist curve and having its other edge 7 curved inwardly at the top to provide the waist line curve and having its lower portion outwardly curved.

Pivoted to the body portion adjacent the uncture of its top edge and curved edge 7 1s a measuring arm S-adapted to form a continuation of the top edge and provided with graduations 9, preferably fractions of inches, which are continuations of graduations 10 on the said top edge. 'The top edge of the body and this arm 8 are slightly curved so as to provide the waist line curve of the ordinary gore.

Pivoted at 12 to the curved edge 7 of the body portion and substantially 9inches below the top edge is a hip measuring arm 13 provided with the graduations 14 for determining the width of the gore at the hip. Should the measurement be less than the width of the gore, the gore body is provided with a series of alined openings l l spaced apart and in such manner as to form a part of the series of graduations 14:.

Pivoted at 15 at the juncture of the curved edge 7 and the bottom of the gore is a measuring arm 16 provided with a series of graduations 17 adapted to form a continuation of the series of graduations 17 at the bottom of the gore for measuring the width of the bottom of the gore desired, the measuring arm 16 forming a continuation of the curve of the bottom of the body portion so that it and the body portion may be used to draw the bottom line of the gore desired.

In use the device is placed upon the cloth to be out after which a line is drawn along the edge 6. The device is then shifted and a second line is drawn parallel with the first line, the space between the two lines being the allowance for aseam. The desired waist, hip and bottom measures of the skirt being known and the desired number of gores being known, a guide chart accompanying the device is consulted to ascertain the number of inches there should be at the waist, hip line and bottom of each gore. 8, 13 and 16 are then extended in substantially parallel relation with each other, the

8 and 16 forming continuations of the top and bottom edges respectively of the'bo'dy portion 5. The number also drawn along the bottom of the body portion and the arm 16 to the mark made to v give the" bottom line of the gore. The arms areall then folded in upon the body portion, after which the entire device is shifted so that the edge 7 will coincide with the marks made, with the top and bottom corners at the sides 7 registering with the ends of the waist and bottom line curves. A line is then drawn along the edge 7. A fourth line may then be drawn at a slight distance from the third line to make proper allowance for the other seam. By cutting the cloth along the first and fourth lines and along the waist and bottom line curves, the completed gore is obtained. In some skirts it is necessary to draw the gore with both edges similar. to the edge 7 of the body portion as in the front gore of a five gore skirt. In this instance, the cloth is folded and the device is positioned with the edge (15 disposed at the fold. The width of one-half of the gore is then marked off on the cloth by means of the arms in the same manner as previously described. By cutting the cloth along this line, and straightening out the cloth the en tire'gore is obtained.

Means are provided for drafting the placket which comprise a substantially elongated plate 20 which is slidably held adjacent the upper portion of the edge 6 in such manner as to project outwardly thereof when desired, by a pair of stud members 21 slidable in slots 22 in the body member. It will be at this point understood that in cutting the gores of the skirt suitable allowance is made for seams and hems and for inverted plaits, if desired.

In drafting a two or three gore skirt or a circular skirt the waist-line curve is so proportionately great that it cannot be measured by the waist-linemeansof the body portion. To measure and draft this line, a plate 23 is provided having a short straight edge 24, a long straight edge 25 disposed at right angles to the short edge and a curved hypotenuse 26. The plate is provided adjacent the edge 2& with an alined series of perforations 27 and along the edge 25 with a similar series of perforations 28. The perforations 27 are designated by two symbols indicating waist measures, such as 21-22- and 22+23 and the perforations 25 are designated each by a single symbol indicating waist measure. These perforations are so placed that a line drawn from the perforation 27 designated as 2l22 to the perforatio'n 28 designated 21or 22,'parallel with curved hypotenuse will be the waist line of a gore for a 'two or three gore skirt for a person having a waist measure of 21 t or "22 respectively.

In making the plate the perforations adjacent the two straight edges thereof are positioned according to a predetermined scale or measurement, the scale for locating the perforations being determined by tests and actual experiencefand, of course, the contour of thehypotenuse or the curved edge of the plate is likewise determined and made.) From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be seen that a comparatively simple device has been provided whereby with reference to a suitable previously compiled chart,'a skirt of any desired size and of any number of gores may be readily and accurately drafted. j a v It will be understood that various minor changesand'modifioations within the scope of the appended claims may be made with: out in any manner departing fromthespirit of the invention. r 7

What is claimed is 1. A skirt draftingdevicecomprisinga body portion having the shape of a gore, with one longitudinal side edge straight throughout the major portion of its length,

the opposite longitudinalside edgecurved throughout the major portion of its length, theupper transverse edgeslightly concaved, and the bottom transverse edge conveXed,

of a waist measuring armpivotally connected to the body portion adjacent the top thereof, the top longitudinal edge of said arm corre sponding to the curvature of the top transverse edge of the body portion, an intermediate hip measuring arm pivoted to the body portion adjacent the curved longitudinal edge thereof and a lower measuring arm pivoted to the body portion adjacent the bottom thereof and having its lower longitudinal edge corresponding to the curvature of the bottom transverse edge of the body portion, said body portion and said upper, intermediate andlower arms all havingwmeasuring scales marked thereon.

2. intermediate hip measuring arm pivotedto the body portion adjacent the curved longitudinal edge thereof and a lower measuring arm pivoted to the body portion adjacent the bottom thereof and having its lower longitudinal edge corresponding to the C11IV2L- ture of the bottom transverse edge of the body portion, said body portion and said upper, intermediate and lower arms all having measuring scales marked thereon, and a laterally slidable placket measuring arm connected with the body portion between the points of connection of the upper and intermediate arms, said placket measuring arm extending longitudinally of the body portion.
