Abstract

20,606. Evans, L. T. G. Sept. 3, 1909. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes. arrangement and construction of; steering.- Relates to an aerial machine in which steering is effected by planes, and balancing is effected by automatically adjusting the centre of gravity, as is described in Specification 20,232/09, and consists in means for adjusting the area of the supporting-surfaces to correspond with the speed of the machine. The main supporting-surface 2 is formed of two planes inclined upwardly toward one another. At the front and rear of the surface 2 are pairs of pivoted elevating- planes 38, 57, and one or more elevating-planes 41 extend across the frame 36. Frames 54 extend from the sides of the surface 2, and carry adjustable planes 55 pivoted to the sides of the plane. The frames 54 and the front and rear frames carry extensible surfaces 62, which are mounted on spring rollers 61 and unwound by cords 64. The cords may be actuated by the longitudinal movement of the motor, which adjusts the centre of gravity of the machine, as described in the Specification before-mentioned. Instead of extensible sheets 62, surfaces may be carried in frames, and adapted to slide over fixed surfaces in order to vary the area. Below the supporting-surface 2 is a deck 77, Fig. 3, formed with a number of apertures provided with valves which can be opened and closed to alter the supporting-effect of the deck. Parachutes.-The extensible surfaces 62 may be moved into a vertical position to act as a parachute.
