Abstract
18,604. Pelterie, R. Esnault-. Aug. 9, 1909, [Convention date]. Planes, construction of; steering.-The sustaining-power of the supporting-planes of a flying-machine is varied during flight by modifying the curvature of the lower surface only of the plane. The cloth d forming the lower surface of the plane is carried by a series of auxiliary flexible ribs e, pivoted at their front end to the front spar a, and sliding in guides on the rear spar. The upper surface c is carried by rigid ribs b. Normally, the ribs e are held close to the ribs b by springs g, and the ribs are separated to decrease the curvature of the lower surface by wedges f on a rod under the control of the aviator or by a toggle i operated by a rod j. The tangent to the extremities of the lower surface of the plane is at an angle of about two degrees with the rectilinear portion of the upper surface.
