Abstract
239,971. Blackburn Aeroplane & Motor Co., Ltd., and Bumpus, F. A. July 17, 1924. Planes, arrangement of.-In monoplanes in which folding wings are divided centrally or are divided from a fixed central portion, the wings are mounted upon fixed oblique axes so disposed that the wings can be turned about such axes from their normal flying positions rearwardly into positions parallel to the fuselage and with their chords vertical, the wings being detachably locked together or to the central fixed portion when iu their flying position. A member 1 supported at its lower end in the fuselage extends upwardly and rearwardly away from the fuselage and is supported at its upper end by stays 2, 3. The upper end of the member is journaled in the wing A which is detachably connected to the wing B along the central longitudinal plane of the fuselage when in its flying position. The front portion of the wing is connected by stays 4, 5 to a bracket pivoted around the lower end of the member 1. The wing may thus be swung about the axis of the member 1 from its flying position to the position shown. Where the wings are carried at the lower part of the fuselage, the member 1 extends downwardly, outwardly and rearwardly from the upper part of the fuselage to the upper surface of the plane. According to the Provisional Specification, the invention may be applied to a biplane having its lower wings smaller than the upper wings. Forwardly-folding wings also are referred to, the member 1 in this case being sloped forwardly instead of rearwardly.
