17,651. Greer, J. K. July 25. Locking nuts.-A nut 5 for railway rail joints &c. is locked upon its bolt 1 by a nut 9, formed with ratchet-teeth 8, Fig. 3, engaging similar teeth on the nut 5. The nut 9 has left-handed threads engaging a divided sleeve 16 which is screwed on to the bolt 1. A wedge 19 driven into a groove 4 in the bolt, and into the division in the sleeve 16, has a yielding key 20 which binds against the threads of the nut 9 and locks that nut to the bolt. The ratchet-teeth 8 are provided with yielding arms 11, which engage the teeth on the nut 5 if it is not desirable to bring the actual teeth on the two nuts into contact.
