Abstract

14,478. Hartmann, W. June 15. Fixed-abutment type; packing drums and vanes; working-fluid supply.-A rotary engine having a conical casing with an eccentric drum, in which a vane is moved radially by a stud on a disk rotating concentrically with the casing, has a valve which controls the admission of the explosive mixture, the explosion thereof, and the removal of the burnt gases. The drum 2, fixed on the shaft 3, is packed by the disk 8, which presses against the disk 7 by ball bearings. The pressure is obtained by spring- pressed conical rollers 16. The position of the drum on the shaft is adjusted by nuts 11, 12. A stud 20 in the disk 7 is screwed into the vane 19, which is thus kept in contact with the casing. Packing-strips 21 are fitted on the vane. The valve 25 is operated by the six-tooth pinion 33 from the two teeth on the disk 34 on the shaft of the engine. The valve is moved through one revolution for three revolutions of the drum. In the first revolution of the drum in each cycle, the explosive mixture is drawn in through the port 26; in the next revolution, this mixture is compressed into the valve chamber, and cooling-air only is drawn into the cylinder, a separate valve being provided to change the connexions to the port 26 to supply air or mixture; in the third revolution, the gas, which is exploded in the valve chamber, is admitted to the casing, and the air is expelled through the port 27. In the first revolution of the next cycle, the exhaust gases are expelled through this port.
