Abstract

12,948. Henri, V., Helbronner, A., and Recklinghausen, M. von. May 27. [Cognate Application, 18,458/10.] Radiations, effecting chemical reactions by.- Apparatus for treating liquids with ultra-violet radiations, particularly liquids which are somewhat opaque, consists of a shallow closed channel, one wall of which is formed of material permeable to ultra-violet radiations, and opposite which the lamp is placed so that the liquid is treated in the form of a thin film, but is not exposed to the air. In one form, the chamber is formed-between the tubes 2, 4, the inner one being formed of mica, quartz, Uviol glass or any other material permeable to ultra-violet rays emanating from the lamp 3. The parts are secured together by clamps 8, and the inlet and outlet connexions 5, 6 are provided for the liquid. Water is sprayed from the pipes 9 on to the plate 2 so as to cool it, and the water runs away by inclining the apparatus a little. A reflector 7, arranged above the lamp, prevents any rays from escaping. The apparatus may be divided into two semicircular parts arranged in series or in parallel. In another form, the chamber, instead of being circular, is built up of a number of flat channels arranged around the lamp and connected in series, and in all cases, a water-jacket may be provided in the side of the chamber remote from the lamp. The distance between the plates, and therefore the thickness of the film, are determined by packing which, when milk.is being treated, is preferably of the thickness of paper. In some cases, it is desirable to change the direction of flow of the liquid, and this can be effected by shaping the packing 19, as shown in Fig. 6. The plates forming both the top and bottom sides of the chamber may be of material permeable to ultra-violet radiations, and a lamp may be placed adjacent to each. The apparatus may be formed by clamping three plates together in a sectional frame with suitable packing between the plates to allow for expansion, and to give the proper thickness to the film of liquid. In the form shown in Figs. 12 and 13, the lamp 3 is placed in a chamber 33 with walls of a material permeable to ultra-violet rays, and a series of chambers 34, for' example, six; are arranged round this chamber, the outer plate of each chamber being held by screws 36 so as to be detachable. The liquid is admitted at one end of the apparatus, and passes by radial passages 38 to the several chambers, being led off in a similar way. Water may be circulated between the cylinders 33 and chambers for the purpose of cooling the plates. The space between the lamp and the chambers surrounding it, may be entirely filled with cooling-liquid, and the lamp may be provided with an evacuated jacket as described in Specification 14,129/10. Liquid may be aranged to pour over this chamber. The liquid to be treated may be drawn through the apparatus by the application of a vacuum-pump to the receiver, and the liquid may be arranged to be aerated in this vessel. The apparatus may be used for maturing and ageing wines, spirits, or other potable liquids, or for sterilizing milk &c., or for bleaching oils, or. for promoting chemical reactions in liquids.
