Abstract

11,424. Kendrick, W. de K. May 11, 1909, [Convention date]. Plug cocks; casings.-Angle cocks or valves, more especially those used in connexion with the air-brake or steam pipes of railway trains, are constructed so that, when the valve is turned nearly to the closed position, ports in the valve plug and casing come into register so as to vent the train-pipe, thereby applying the brakes, or, in the case of steam pipes, releasing the steam preparatory to disconnexion of the hose. The ports referred to are preferably located at the bottom of the cock, so that they serve also for the escape of water or moisture. Fig. 3 shows the cock when nearly closed, a port 11 in the plug being open to the train-pipe, while another port 12 in the plug registers with an escape port 13 in the casing. When it is desired to retain the air or steam in the pipe, the cock is turned to the fully-closed position, in which the ports 12, 13 are not in register, as shown in Fig. 4. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 21,896/93, 12,225/06, and 18,598/06.
