, Be it known that I, JAMES FALLON, of North Bay, in the district of Nipissing, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Angle-( ocks tor Air-Brake Systems, of which the following is a specification.
My invention re ates to improvements in angle cocks for air brake systems, as employed on railway trains, and the objects are to improve the present form of angle cock, by providing means which will automatically throw the air brake into 0 oration it the cock should be tampered wit-h, eft closed, or moved from the open position in train line service, a further object being to provide such means as will gradually open the train line service, and so prevent the application oi the emergency ln'ake.
In its construction, the invention includes the ordinary casing and plug, only the plug is provided with a port in the side tl1ereoi,ahd the casing has a corresponding port which is gradually enlarged in the direction of the rotation of the plug, whereby it the plug is rotated to closed position, the interior of the angle cock will be placed in tree and clear communication with the open air.

will be gradually unclosed, preventing such a rapid escape of air as would operate the emergency brakes. In the particular embodiment illustrated, the port 0 is triangular in form.
In operation, when the cars are connected. in train line service, the arrangement of the angle cock, will be as indicated in Fig. 1', the passage-way a permitting the free passage of air. Should, however, the angle cock be tampered wit-h, and the plug rotated by the handle (1 or other means, the train-line pipe on one side of the angle cock will be laced in communication with the open air through the ort c, the passage-way a and the port Intiie opening of the port 0 being to its peculiar shape.
It will be observed that I have provided an exceedingly simple and effective means of accomplishing the desired result. The port 0 communicates directly with the open air and has not any valve or other device associated therewith.
I am aware that devices have been provided having ports in the side of the angle cock, flout these ports, in general, communicate with further valves orcocks, which prevent the free passage to the open air and render the device very liable to become out of order.
While the invention has been described herein, with reat particularity of detail, yet
ily understood that in carrying out the construction of the same, changes, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It is also important to note that my invention only places one side of the angle cock in communication with the open air. This enables the engineer to still retain control of the forward art of the train, and does not throw the who esystem out of operation, as it would, if both sides of the angle cock communicated with the open air. The effect of the operation is to throw the brakes on rear part of the train into operation, which will exert a drag, rendering the immediate rectification of the error necessary.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In an air brake system, the combination including a plug having a passageway therethroug and a port in the side of the passage-way, a casing inclosing the plug having a port therein gradually enlarged.- in the direction of rotation of the lug.
