Abstract

10,735. Grieve, T. S., and Brooksby, E. May 2. Circular machines. - Relates to improvements in the automatic production of seamless hosiery wherein the number of loops per course is less in the foot than in the leg, by the use of transfer needles provided with swells 72 and recesses 72<a>, or with loopspreading fingers of the type described in Specification 18,803/04. The rib needles are preferably mounted in a conical bed 11, the sinker bed 25 being placed outside the plain cylinder with a space in between. While plain knitting is in progress, the bed 11 can be lifted up out of the way. The various changes required are effected by two groups of cams 52, 54 which act upon intermediate levers 51, 53 to press various bolt cams such as 44, 46, 47, and 49 into the path of the needles. To allow of the adjustment of the cylinder relative to the ribbing cone necessitated by the change from 1/1 to 4/1 rib, the pinion 6 driving the cylinder is provided with an oblique keyway in which fits the key 57 connecting the pinion 6 with the shaft 7 for driving the ribbing cone. This key can be pushed up by means of a screw 59 and disc 60 by the action of pattern mechanism on a star wheel 61 provided with oblique crown teeth 62. To fill up the holes which would otherwise be caused by the introduction of additional wales into the fabric, the corresponding needles are not allowed to draw loops for the first course after their introduction, the thread being laid across their stems.
