WEB-HOLDER FOR RIB-KNITTING MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
Appleman med .my s, 1906. seria No. 324,615.
To all whom it 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. SCOTT, a citizen ofthe United States, residing in Leeds Point, Atlantic county, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Web-Holders for Rib-Knitting Machines, of which the following is av specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a rib knitting machine with web holders of such character that the "knocking over of the stitches on the ribbing needles can be effected without the use of weights, draft rolls or like devices for impartin tension to the knitted web. This object att-ain inl the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in
which p Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of sufiicient of a rib knitting machine to illustrate my invention; Figs. 2 and 2 a are plan views of` part of the same, Fig. 3 is a view similar to ig. 1, but illustrating another embodiment of my invention and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are views of the web holders employed.
In the drawing, 1 represents the needle cylinder of the machine, 2 a needle dial, 43, 3a the cylinder needles and 4 vthe dial needles, which may be operated in order to knit, b any suitablearrangement of cams in a cylrinde cam box and dial cam ring.
` The needle cylinder and dial may be the rotative members of the machine, and may operate in connection with a stationary cylinder canrbox and dial cam ring, or the reverse of this arrangement may be adopted, the cam box and the cam ring being the rotative members and the cylinder and d-ial being stationary. 1
A set of reciprocating sinkers and web holders 5 operates in conjunction with the cylinder needles in the same manner as in previous machines of this class, butin the present machine I employ also a supplementary set of web holders 6, which operates in conjunction with the dial needles and by imparting tension 'to the sinker Wales of a course in advance of that which is bein drawn by the dial needles causes the knoc ing over of the stitches u on said dial needles without the necessity ofpweightingor otherwise imparting tension to the knitted web in the usual way.
. The web holders 6 have stems or shanks 7 which are vertically guided in a cylinder 8 below the dial, reciprocating movement being imparted-to the web holders 6 by means of a cam ring 9 which surrounds the cylinder 8 holders 6 for effecting this result..
Durin the production of ribbed web the -web hol ers Galone are sufficient for the performance of the desired holding of the web, and the web holders 5 may, at such time, be rendered inoperative by proper adjustment of their actuatin cams, but in a machine such as that Whic I have illustrated, which is intended for the production of either ribbed or lain web and has normally inactive cylin er needlesl 3a in line with the dial needles, the use ofthe web holders 5 is necessary in order to effect the desired retention of the web during the knitting of plain fabric when the cylinder needles only are in operation, and at such time the supplementary web holders 6 may be rendered inoperative, if desired, by proper adjustment of their operating cams.
In that embodiment of my invent-ion shown in Fig. 3 substantially the same construction is adopted, the only difference being that the web holders 6 are guided in grooves inan inverted conical bed 11, and are acted upon by a correspondingly shaped cam ring 12.
The web holders 6 act upon the sinker wales of a course of stitches in advance of that which is being drawn by the dial needles', being iirst raised and then depressed to engage said sinker wales at a point in advance of that at which the new stitches are drawn by the dial needles, thc 'new sinker wales passing over the tops of said web holders 6.
When the web'holders 6, are intended to engage single sinker wales, their hooked ends may be bent laterally, as shown in Fig. 2, but when each web holder 6 is intended to engage two sinker wales, its hooked end is forked, as shown in Fig. 2a.
While I have shown my invention in connection with a circular knitting machine having cylinder and dial, and have selected a ICO pose of illustrating my invention, it wi be evident that it is a plicable to circular rib knitting machines o other types, or to 'ma-v chines having straight needle beds.
I claim z- 1. A rib knitting machine having two sets of web holders, one set 0 erating in conjunction with the'needles o one needle carrier, and the other set operating in conjunction with the needles of the other needle carrier.
2. A rib knitting machine having two sets of web holders, one set o erating in conjunction with the needles o one needle carrier,
, and the other set operating in conjunction with the needles of the other needle carrier, and having movement in a direction transverse to the direction' of movement of said needles. v
3.- A rib knitting machine having two 'sets of web holders, one set o erating in conjuncand the .other set operating in conjunction with the needles of the other needle carrier to engage the sinker wales of a course of stitches drawn by the said needles.
In testimony whereof7 I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT W.SCOTT.
