Abstract

8562. Bauder, F., and MÚndez, L. M. April 8. Current motors; reversing. -In a reversible wind-motor sails d are employed, the lower edge of each being secured to a yard f and the upper edge to a spar a which lies in a vertical plane at right-angles to the plane containing the yard f. The sail is thus bent along a diagonal c. The spars a are supported by ropes j, k running in pulleys in yards h. The yards f, h are secured by screwing or hinging to collars m, m<1> on the power shaft g, and the operating-ropes j, k pass over pulleys in these collars to winches J<1>, K<1>, which may be worked together or independently. To reverse the direction of rotation, the spar a is swung through two rightangles, whereupon it is supported by the yard h<2>, the other spars being similarly displaced simultaneously. The vertical edge b of each sail is looped to a vertical rope b'. The bend c may be strengthened by a sewn-in rope. The inner end of each spar a is supported by a halyarding-rope i, which passes to a winch I<1>. The four ropes of each set i, j, k are preferably combined into a single rope before reaching their respective winches. The sails may be made of light metal sheets hinged at c. Thrust bearings o, o<1> and a step bearing are provided. The motors may be employed on aeroplanes, dirigible balloons, or ships. In the application to ships, two masts g, each carrying two motors, are geared to the propeller shaft. Suitable supports are arranged for the masts. The motors may drive a dynamo which generates current to be stored for driving when the wind is light, or they may be used as auxiliary motors.
