Abstract

7859. Oliver, H. R., and Ohlgart, G. P. March 31. Boots and shoes, cleaning and polishing.- Relates to boot-cleaning machines of the kind described in Specification 14,252/05 in which the sides are cleaned and polished by rotary brushes travelling in an orbital path round the boots, the toes being polished by reciprocating fabrics. The present invention comprises mechanism for driving the toe - polishers, whereby they are reciprocated in a substantially horizontal plane. Figs. 1 and 3 are elevations of a machine for cleaning two boots simultaneously. The rotating side brushes 94, 130 move in orbital paths round the boots, being driven from the main shaft 6 through a series of bevel-gears which allow the necessary freedom of movement. The main driving-shaft 6 carries, at the front of the machine, a, crankdisk 8 connected by a link 47 to a rocking lever 45; the upper arm of which is connected to bands 37 wound on pulleys 36. The toepolishing fabrics 35 are stretched between rollers on the shafts 15 of the pulleys 36 and similar rollers on shafts 16, so that, as the lever 45 is rocked, the fabrics 35 are reciprocated horizontally over the toes of the boots. Springs effect the return movement of the fabrics 35 and belts 37. The shafts 15, 16 are mounted on a vertically-adjustable frame 11, which is raised and lowered by counterbalanced levers 21. A cam 27 on a worm-driven shaft effects the movement of the levers 21 in such a way that the toe-polishers are lifted as the rotary polishers pass the front of the boot.
