Boots and shoes, cleaning and polishing.-In a machine for dusting, blacking, and polishing shoes, the mechanism is driven by an electric motor 2 started by the insertion of a coin in a slot 3. Two pulleys 6, 7 are belt-driven by the motor, one driving the main shaft, the other operating a dust aspirator 8. In the base of the machine are two cylinders 17, each of which carries a set of three brushes 21 with corresponding guides 34 arranged circumferentially at 120‹. The guides are adjusted to suit the size of the shoe by a pair of levers which rest against the foot-stand 10, and the operating-brushes are reciprocated by pistons within the cylinders 17, the brushes not in contact with the shoe remaining stationary. Cam-shaped flanges 41 on the cylinder allow the blacking-spreaders 46 to operate on the blacking-brushes only; and the cylinders are geared to rotate through one-third of a revolution at a time, bringing all the brushes in turn to operate on the shoe. After the first cycle of operations, a bell rings to warn the user; and on the completion of the polishing of the second shoe a switch is opened to stop the motor.
