Abstract

3106. Mackenzie, J. W., [Westmoreland Automatic Machine Co.]. Feb. 8. Boots, cleaning and polishing. -Relates to apparatus for cleaning the sides of boots by rotating reciprocating brushes, and to means for applying liquid polish, and is described in connexion with a machine having front or toe-brush mechanism of the kind described in Specification 21,821/07. The brushes 31 are carried by spring- pressed arms pivoted on carriers 23 sliding on rods 19 mounted at each side of the sole-plate 4. Each carrier 23 is reciprocated by a link 24 connected to one arm of a bell-crank lever 25, the other arm of which is connected by a link 27 to a crank mounted on one of the shafts of the gearing for reciprocating the toe-brush. The brushes are rotated from chain gearing 35 driven by a bevel-wheel sliding on a shaft 21 geared to the shaft 7 which rotates the toe brushes. The polish containers 40 are mounted on the carriers 23 and the jets of air for inducing the sprays of polish are derived from a cylinder 47 driven by a crank from the shaft 18 through flexible pipes 42. The valve mechanism and the sprays are controlled and constructed as described in the above-mentioned Specification.
