Abstract
17,556. British United Shoe Machinery Go., [United Shoe Machinery Co.]. July 24. Sole-levelling.-In a sole - levelling machine in which there is relative movement between a shoe-supporting jack and a levelling-device to transfer the point of operation of the device over the shoe sole, means are provided to vary positively the inclination of the device to its direction of travel as and when desired. The invention is described as applied to the machine described in Specification 24,664/07, and is particularly adapted for removing the ridges left in turn-shoe work after such shoes have been re-lasted. The jack 6, Fig. 1, is moved to and fro beneath a levelling-roll 1 by connexions 8, 9 with a shaft 10, to which a partial rotation is imparted periodically in opposite directions by a friction disk 11 engaged alternately by pulleys 12, 13 on a rocker frame 14 controlled by the operator through a hand-lever 16; as the jack is reciprocated, it is rocked laterally bv means of a handle 25. The roll 1 is held yieldingly against the shoe by connexions with a treadle 22, and is continuously rotated from the main shaft by a belt passing over a pulley 27 mounted on a shaft in the upper rear portion of the machine frame; this shaft is connected by bevel gears 28, 29 with a shaft 30, Fig. 3, which drives the roll 1 through bevel-gears 31, 35, and a double-faced bevel-wheel 32, Fig. 4. The wheel 32 is journaled on a stud 39 threaded in a yoke-shaped roll-carrying frame 36 in vertical alinement with a stud shaft 37, which is adjustably mounted in the roll-supporting frame 2. The roll is adapted to be inclined as the jack is tipped laterally, and for this purpose the jack is connected by a universal joint 41 to a shaft 40 slidingly supported in a bearing 43. A segment 46 splined on the shaft 40 gears with a sliding-sleeve 48 on a transverse shaft 47, and link connexions 52, 54, 55, 56, 58 connect this sleeve to one side of the yoke 36, so that when the jack is moved laterally, the yoke 36 is moved to incline the roll 1 by a corresponding amount.
