WILHELM N OWOTNY, OF STREET, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE PHOENIX BOOT MACHINERY COMPANY, LIMITED, OF STREET, ENGLAND.
MACHINE FOR PRODUCING SEWING-RIBS ON THE SOLES OF BOOTS AND SHOES.
Patented- Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed May 10. 1907. Serial No. 372.988.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM NowoTNY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and resident of The Limes, Street, in the county of Somerset, England, mechanic, (whose post-oflice address is The Limes, Street, county of Somerset, England) have invented a new and useful Improved Machine for Producing Sewing-Ribs on the Soles of Boots and Shoes, of which the fol,
lowing is a specification.
The subject matter of th1s invention relates to machines for the production of sewing ribs on shoe and boot soles asdescribed in British Patent No. 13,432 of 1902 and the object of the invention is principally the improvement and simplification of the machine described in this patent for the purpose of enabling the working tools to be better and more quickly adjusted, to suit the different thicknesses of. material than is the case in the machine described in British Patent No. 13,432/1902. This object is attained by the mounting of the upper press tool in a frame pivoted at its lower part to the upper frame of the machine, and in consequence the tool can be moved towards or away from theimmovable upsetting tool without any special adjusting device accord: ing to the thickness of thelateral rim to be bent up, and also by mounting the lower forward feeding tool so as to be capable of moving horizontally independently of the press tool mounted upon the rocking frame and so that it can be adjusted towards the upsetting tool.
The subject matter of the invention is shown in the drawing.
a is the frame of the machine, I) is the upsetting tool, 0 the upper press tool and d the lower forward. feeding tool, 6 is a frame pivoted to the frame a of the machine at The lower forward feeding tool d is mounted to rotate in the frame a of the machine and is also adapted to move horizontally by means of guiding slots and a screw spindle g. The upper press tool 0 is mounted by means of a sleeve 7L on the rocking frame 6 and can be adjusted up from or down to the forward feeding tool (1 by means of the hand wheel i according to the thickness of the sole to be operated upon. The upsetting tool I) is pivotally mounted at 9' on the frame a of the machine and has the to and fro swing required for upsetting imparted to it by a groove cam 7c keyed fast upon the driving shaft Z. The rocking frame 6 is brought back to its initial position by a helical spring m. For determining the extent of the swing of the frame and consequently the strength of the thickening of the sewing rib there is provided a screw 0 adjustable in'a bearing n on the frame e and bearing against an abutment on the frame of the machine.
For the purpose of constantly keeping up the driving of the upper press tool 0 from the driving shaft Z in the various positions of the rocking frame 6 the bevel wheel gearing 1) which drives the press tool is connected to the driving shaft Z by a double universal joint g and the axle of the gear wheel carried by this joint is mounted to rotate in a bearing 1" of the upper transverse part of the frame.
The lower forward feeding tool (1 is driven by a horizontal shaft t driven by means of a bevel Wheel drive 8 off the driving shaft Z.
This shaft t has long teeth at on its other end by means whereof it engages with a ring of teeth v on the forward feeding tool (i, so that the tool, when it is moved horizontally by means of the screw spindle g it always remains in engagement with the shaft t. The vertical shaft of the tool 01 is passed through a bearing to (in which reposes a caoutchouc ring w*) and carries on its lower end hand wheels so for adjusting the forward feeding toolhigher or lower.
The working of the described arrangement of machine for the production of sewing ribs on shoe soles is as follows :After the sole to be operated upon has been laid upon the lower forward feeding tool, the latter is adjusted by means of the screw spindle 9 according to the size of the rib to be upset and by means of the hand wheels 90 to the desired height with regard to the upsetting tool I). The extent of swing of the frame 6 and consequently the pressure of the sole against the upsetting tool is then regulated by means of the set screw 0 and finally the thickening of the sewing rib is determined by suitably adjusting the height of the upsetting tool by means of the hand wheel t, after which the driving shaft 1 is set in motion in the usual way, the lower forward feeding tool (1 and the upper press tool being set in rotation by the described gear wheel train 8, u, and p and the upsetting tool b set swinging by the groove cam is.
As the upsetting tool I) has no adjusting device to wear out during the working of the machine and as the upper press tool 0 presses against the u setting tool 6 during the oscillation of the ame and as finally the working (operative) edge of the press tool always preserves the same inclination to the upsetting tool I), a very neat uniform product is obtained with the described arrangement. Finally in consequence of the elastic mounting of the forward feeding tool cl owing to the rubber ring inserted in its bearings, too strong a pressing action and damage of the sole to be operated upon or of the tool also is avoided.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A machine for producing sewing ribs for boot and shoe soles comprising a stationary frame, an upper press tool, a lower forward feeding tool, an upsetting tool, a swinging frame for carrying the upper press tool and means for pivoting the said frame at its lower end to the stationary frame substantially as described.
a 2. A machine for producing sewing ribs for boot and shoe soles comprising an upper press tool, a lower forward feeding tool, an upsetting tool and a swinging frame carrying the upper press tool, a driving shaft for the machine and a universally jointed shaft interposed between the said driving shaft and the upper press tool substantially as described.
3. A machine for producing sewing ribs for boot and shoe soles comprising an upper press tool, a lower forward feeding tool', means for adjusting the lower forward feeding tool higher or lower, an upsetting tool, means for adjusting the lower forward feeding tool horizontally with regard to the end of the upsetting tool and means for imparting a swinging movement to the upsetting tool, substantially as described 4. A machine for producing sewing ribs for boot and shoe soles comprising an upper press tool, a lower forward feeding tool, an upsetting tool, means for adjusting the lower forward feeding tool horizontally with regard to the end of the upsetting tool and means for supporting the lower forward feeding tool elastically substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILHELM NOVVOTNY.
