MACHINE FOR OPERATING UPON SOLES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR BATES, a subject of the King of England, residing at Leicester in the county of Leicester, England, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Operating Upon Soles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to channel open ing machines such as are commonly employed in the manufacture of boots and shoes to turn back the lip of the channel for the purpose of preparing the channel for the reception of the stitches or other fastening devices by which the sole is to be attached to the shoe.
In the channel opening machines commonly employed in the art a rotary wiper formed to enter the channel is employed to smooth back the channel lip and a rotary work support is provided to bring and hold the sole in operative relation to the wiper. In so far as I am aware, however, in the machines of the prior art the movement of the rotary work support to bring the sole into operative relation to the wiper has been in a direction substantially parallel with the axis of the wiper so that the latter could not enter the channel in the sole without adjustment of the sole upon the work support after the sole had been moved into contact with the wiper.
An object of the present invention is to provide a channel opening machine which shall be free from the above objection.
.A further object of the invention is to generally improve the construction of channel opening machines.
With these objects in view the present invention contemplates the provision in a channel opening machine of a rotary flap turning tool and a work support arranged for relative approaching movement substantially in the direction of the channel regarded in cross section when upon the work support. and work support take place in the direction in which the channel extends into the sole the channel opening tool will readily enter the channel when the work support presses the sole into engagement with the tool without necessitating adjustment of the sole upon the work support after the tool has engaged the sole.
In the present embodiment of the inven tion the channel opening tool comprises a wiper rotatably mounted in a normally stationary bearing and the work support comprises a rotary work supporting roll arranged for movement to press the sole toward the wiper in the direction in which the channel extends into the sole when the latter is in operative position in the machine, so that if the sole is correctly placed upon the work supporting roll the wiper will enter the channel when the roll moves toward the tool without any subsequent adjustment of the sole.
Other features of the invention will be hereinafter described in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In thedrawings,-Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of a portion of a channel opening machine showing one embodiment of the present invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing a detail of construction of the machine shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 2 denotes the frame of the machine whlch is provided upon its upper front portion with an inclined bearing 4 in which is journaled the shaft 6 carrying at its lower end the rotary wiper S for turning back the lip of thechannel. As shown in Fig. 1 the shaft 6 inclines downwardly and rearwardly, viewed from the front of the machine. The shaft 6 may be rotated by any suitable mechanism such as commonly employed in machines of this type. The work supporting roll 9 is of frusto-conical form and is mounted below the wiper upon a shaft 10 which is journaled intermediate its ends in a movable support or carriage 12. The carriage 12 comprises a sleeve 14 which forms the bearing for the shaft 10 and is provided at its rear portion with a downwardly extending arm 16 pivoted upon a stud 18 secured to the frame of the machine approximately in line with the axis 6 of the wiper 8. The stud 18 is horizontally disposed so that the carriage with the feed roll 9 can swing in an approximately vertical plane and while said stud is arranged approximately in line with the axis of the wiper it is preferably positioned as shown in Fig. 1 slightly displaced inwardly out of exact alinement with the axis of the wiper so that in the swinging movement of the carriage the work supporting roll will move upwardly a sufiicient distance to press the sole firmly against the wiper. A spring 20 is preferably provided to retain the carriage and roll 9 in their raised positions and the carriage is also provided with a stop face 22 adapted to engage a part of the machine frame to limit the upward movement of the roll 9 when no work is in the machine. The roll 9 may be moved away from the wiper to permit the insertion of the work by means of a rod 24: which may be actuated by any suitable treadle.
The shaft 10 carrying the feed roll 9 is connected by a universal joint with another shaft 26 journaled in a bearing 28 carried by the rear port-ion of the frame of the machine. The shaft 26 is rotated by means of a gear wheel 30 carried upon the shaft and other cooperating mechanism such as commonly employed in machines of this type. The form of universal joint employed for connecting the shaft 10 with the shaft 26 is of the type wherein sockets are formed in the ends of the shafts. In these sockets are respectively received the enlarged spherical shaped ends 36 of a short connecting shaft 38 and extending from said enlarged ends are cylindrical pins or studs 40 having flattened ends which engage longitudinal grooves or channels formed in the sockets of the shafts 10 and 26 respectively. By this construction longitudinal displacement of the shaft 10 relative to the shaft 26 is permitted while at the same time the shaft 10 can move angularly to the shaft 26 without interfering with the movement of rotation which it receives from said shaft. To guide the roll 9 laterally in its movement toward and from the wiper the sleeve 14 which passes through an opening in the machine frame may engage side plates 42 secured to the frame upon opposite sides of the sleeve and, if desired, the parts of the sleeve 14 that bear against these plates may be provided with a flattened surface to afford a better bearing.
It will be seen in the construction shown that as the carriage which supports the shaft of the work supporting roll is mounted for pivotal movement about a point approximately in line with the axis of the rotary wiper the work supporting roll will be forced to move toward and from the wiper substantially in a direction parallel with the circular face of the wiper.
In the operation of the machine the work supporting roll 9 is moved against the resistance of the spring 20 away from the wiper in the usual way. The sole is then laid on the work supporting roll and the lat ter is allowed to press the sole into operative engagement with the'wiper. As this sole pressing movement of the work supporting roll takes place in a direction substantially parallel to the circular sole engaging face of the wiper it will be seen that the sole will be pressed toward the wiper substantially in the direction in which the channel extends into the sole upon the work support so that if the work has been placed correctly upon the work supporting roll the wiper will readily enter the channel as the work support is allowed to return to its operative position without any further adjustment of the sole.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A channel opening machine having, in combination, a rotary channel opening tool arranged to enter the channel and to receive the sole with the edge thereof beneath said tool, a work support, one of said members having a stationary axis, and a pivot about which the other member may be swung in a direction substantially the same as that in which the channel extends into the sole positioned upon the work support.
2. A channel opening machine having, in combination, a rotary wiper provided with a sole engaging face, said wiper being arranged to extend in the channel and-to receive the sole with the edge thereof beneath said tool, a work support, and a pivot about which one of said members may be swung in a direction substantially parallel with said face for effecting pressure of a sole against said wiper.
3. A channel opening machine, having in combination, a channel opening tool comprising a rotary wiper and a work support for pressing a sole into engagement with the wiper, the said work support being mounted for swinging movement in a ver tical plane about a pivot arranged approximately in line with the axis of the wiper whereby the sole supported upon the work support is pressed toward the wiper in a direction substantially parallel with the circular sole engaging face of the wiper.
4. A channel opening machine, having in combination, a channel opening tool comprising a rotary wiper and a rotary work supporting roll for pressing the sole into engagement with the tool, and actuating mechanism for said roll substantially in alinement with the axis thereof, the said roll being mounted for swinging movement In testimony whereof I have signed my 10 in a vertical plane about a pivot arranged name to this specification in the presence of below said axis and at the rear of the roll two subscribing witnesses.
