SPECILICJA'IION` forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,608, dated January 8, 1884.
nppncannn sled october 2o, ieee. p (No model.)
Be it known that I, PAUL J. Lari-mii, a citizen ofthe United States, residing in Ionia, in the county of Ionia `and State of Michigan,
` have invented a new and useful Improvement i in `Heel-Burnishing and Milling or Beading j Machines, of which thefollowing is a speciiication. d `This invention relates to a combined boot or 1o shoe heel burnishing andheel-seat beading or milling machine. l i The object of the invention is to provide a machine for not only burnishing the heel, but also for milling, beading, or otherwise ornainenting the heel-seat or the base of the heel between the heel proper and the quarter or j counter. .j i i The object of the invention is also to so combine the heel-seat milling or beading device 2o or mechanism with the 'burnishing-,machina that t-he former may be readily and conveniently attached or applied to ordinary burnishing-machines already` in use. d In my invention the milling or beading tool is mounted on or secured to a jointed slide, the joint in the slide permitting the tool as it .r is` revolved around the heel to follow the heelseat, `the tool being guided by a lip, which fits in the groove or `crease between the heel-seat 3o and counter. lThisj ointed slideis itself mounted movably on theburnishing-tool, so as to l revolve with it around the heel, and mechanism is provided for moving the slide, so as to `project its milling or other tool beyond the 55 polishingurface` of the burnishing-tool, and thus pressing said tool against the heel-seat to mill, bead, or otherwise ornament the same.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which simi- 4o lar letters of reference Vindicate like parts, Fig- `ure l is a side elevation of a device embody- ",ing my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged or full-sized front view of the burnishing-tool `and the jointed slide mounted thereon. Fig.
3 is a plan View of the machine. Fig. `4 is a central vertical longitudinal section taken on line i 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view ofthe jointed slide on line 5 oi'Fig. 1
Fig. 6 is a section of the handle and rack on line 6 6 of Fig. 3
In the drawings, A is the frame or pedesta ofthe machine, upon which the rock-shaft A is j ournaled in suitable bearings, andto which shaft the rotary pivoted tool-carrier arrn B is secured, so asto rock or swing with said shaft Aaround t-he heel of the boot or shoe. The toolcarrier arm B is hinged or pivoted by means of-abolt, b, to a projection, b', on the sleeve B', which sleeve is rigidly secured to the rockshaft A by a set-screw or other suitable means.
C is the burnishing-tool pivoted on the end of the carrier-arm by a bolt, c, and held in position by a spring, o, which is bolted to the carrier-arm, and the end of which abuts against the rear part of the burnishing-tool. The carrier-arm B is oscillated or turned on its pivot b, so as to continually press the burnishingtool against the heel as it swings around the same by means of a spring, C', one end of which is secured by a bolt, c2, to a iiange, o3, on the sleeve B', and the other end of which rests on a roller, c, mounted in the slotted braeketCZ, which is suspended from and bolted to the tool-carrier arm.
C;s is a set-screw, the end of which projects against the rock-shaft, and which serves to limit the pivotal or vibratory motion of the tool-carrier arm.
D D is a two-part or jointed slide, the upper one of which, D, is provided with tongues or guides d on its edges, which fit in corresponding guideways or grooves, cl, cutin the projecting ledges d2 on the front end of the burnishing-tool C. The lower or tool-holding part, D', of the jointed slide is made narrow enough to iit between the ledges cl2, so as to permit of its pivotal motion on the upper slide, D, and it is provided with a curved lip, d3, adapted to project` into the crease or groove o. between the heel-seat and counter of theshoe or boot. The tool-holder D', being pivoted freely to the slide D. permits the lip cl3 to follow the said crease or groove as it swings aroundl the heel,v and thus causes the milling or other tool mounted on said holder D to 'accurately follonr the heel-seat. The `outer face, d4, ofthe lip d3 is curved to conform to the counter lof A whichv is attached to theholder D' by a screw,
(Z9, that passes through aslot, d10, in said plate, so that the milling wheel or tool may be readily adjusted and quickly changed for another tool when desired. The pin d7 lits loosely in a slot, d, in the tool-holder D', so as to permit of this adjusment. The toolholder D' is hinged to the slide D by a pin, d, secured rigidly in the lug d on the holder D', and which pin lits in grooves or slots c in the ears d15 on the slide D. A spring, d1, is secured to the slide D by a screw, d, and a pin, d, and it is provided at its other end with a slot, dw, through which projects a pin, du?, secured vto the holder D'. This spring serves to hold the pivoted tool-holder D in position, and at the same time allow it to yield or turn-on its pivot when necessary, and the slot d1 and pin d20 also operate to limit its pivotal motion as well as to support the holder D' or connect it to the slide D. By this means of pivoting or connecting the toolholder- D' to the slide D the former may be very readily removed from the slide and replaced by another, as all that is required to be done to remove it is to slightly loosen the screw d", when the pin d20 may be disengaged from the slot di.
In addition to the milling tool or wheel d I ordinarily provide the tool-holder D' with a raised projection or beading-tool, d, at the base of the lip d, on the inside thereof, which serves to curve or round off the upper edge or corner of the heel-seat; and the tool-holder D' may of course be provided with other tools or devices for ornainenting the heel-seat of the shoe or boot, and they may be made either integral with the holder D' or movabl y or rigidly mounted thereon.
The slide D is reciproca-ted vertically in the burnishing-tool C, so as to press or hold the milling or other tool against the heel-seat by means of a reciprocating wedge, E, provided with an inclined dovetail or guide, e, whichl lits in a corresponding dovctail groove or way, e', on the slide D, so that the horizontal movement of the wedge will impart a vertical movement to the slide D and to the toolholder D', pivoted to said slide. The wedge E reciprocates between the ledges or projecting anges or faces d, and is provided with flanges or guides ci, which rest or slide on the pins or projections e3 on the projecting sides cZl of the burnishing-tool. Theburnishing-toolis made hollow, so that the wedge E may reciprocate or be confined inside the same, and thus present a neater and more compact appearance. The wedge is confined on its top by a cappiece. e4, secured by screws c to the projecting ledges or sides d". The bottom face, e, of the wedge, fitting on the inclined end clef the slide D, serves to force said slide down, the dovetails c and e serving simplyto raise the slide. Its reciprocating movement is imparted to the wedge E from the handle or lever F, which is pivoted to the frame A by means of the forked rack-bar G,. collar H, and connecting-bar K. The lever Fis provided with a toothed segment, f, and it is pivoted to the cap-bolt, f', which secures the cap f 2 to the frame A, the lever being provided with a brass bushing or collar, f, which surrounds the bolt and prevents the leveri from coming in contact with the threads or rough surface of the bolt. A washer, f4, lits on top of the lever. The rack-bar G reciprocates on the cap f2, the rack-bar being provided with a slot, g, through which projects aguide-block, g', which is secured to the cap f by means of screws or pins g2, and a cap-plate, g3, the edges of which projectover the rack-bar, so as to hold it down. The rackbar is also provided with a yoke, g", which engages with a groove, h', in the'collar H. The collar H fits loosely on the shalt A', and is provided with an arm, 7L', having an inclined slot, h2, therein. 'The connecting-bar K reciprocates on the top lace of the tool-carrier arm B, its motion being guided by a iiatsided screw, 7s, secured to the arm B, and which fits in a slot, k', in the connecting-bar, and by a bent cap, k2, fitting over the connecting-bar, and which is also secured to the arm Brby means of the screws k3. The connecting-*bar K is pivoted or jointed to the wedge E by' a pin, 7a4, so as to permit of and not interfere IOO with the vibratory motion of the burnishing- K tool C on its pivot c. -A pin, 7c, passes through a hole in the end ofthe connecting-bar K, and through the slot h' in the collar-arm h', thus connecting sad bar to the collar H. The function of the slot h2 is to permit ofthe vibratory movement ofthe arm B on its pivot b, and to compensate for the end thrust consequent thereto, orlongitudinal movement that would otherwise be imparted to the collar H on the shaft A'. This slot should be cut in the arc of a circle whose center -is the pivot of the arm B. By making the connection between the rack-bar F and the connecting-bar K by means of the collar H on the shaft A', the swinging movement of the vibratory arm B around said shaft is freely permitted. The connecting-bar K is divided or slotted at K', so as to embrace the adjusting-screw C3.
IIO
All that is required to apply my invention -Y to any ordinary burnishing-machine is simply to slip the collar .H on the shaft A', remove the cap-boltf', and attach the lever F, mount the rack-bar G on the cap f2, and the connecting-bar K on the vibratory arm B, and make guideways in slide D. Y
