Abstract

4400. Abate, W. L. Feb. 22. Hand and foot operated gears; oscillating valves. -A fluid-pressure piston for operati n g the drawspindle of hollowspindle chucks, clutches, beltforks, &c., is controlled by a handoperated valve with a special arrangement o f ports. The valve chamber 24, Fig. 6, is separated from the cylinder by a web 26 and communicates with the rear of the piston by ports b, Figs. 6 and 8, and with the front by ports a. Thevalve has a series of ports c, Figs. 2 and 4, adapted to communicate through passages 25<a>, 25b with pressure supply at 25, Fig. 6, and to register with the ports a, b. Ports xa<1>, xa<2>, xb<1>, xb<2> communicate with an exhaust passage 28 and are adapted to register with the central one of each of the ports a, b. The valve stem carries a pair of arms which contact with a spring- pressed cross-bar and normally maintain the valve in its central position, in which both ends of the cylinder are connected to exhaust, thus removing the pressure from the parts to be operated after the operation is completed. The amount of oscillation of the valve is limited by a pin 41<a> in the web 26 engaging an arcshaped slot 41 in the valve.
