Abstract

3087. Lake, W. E., [Goss Printing Press Co.]. Feb. 8. Folding paper.-Transverse folding-mecbanism, of the kind in which the paper is folded by a blade on a moving carrier coacting with gripping-jaws which move to deliver the sheets to delivery mechanism, is constructed so that the jaws move in an oval path, and so that the jaws point in substantially the same direction during their motion. As shown, the folding-blade 30 is mounted in a slotted block 32 in a cylindrical or other moving carrier 22, which is provided with grippers to receive the sheet cut by cylinders 10, 11 and guided by guides 33, 34. The folding-blade tucks the paper between a fixed jaw 42 and movable jaws 44 on a rock-shaft 43 controlled by a spring-pressed rod 46 guided by a perforated pivoted stud. The jaws are normally closed, but are opened before the folding and delivery operations by means of fixed cams 70, 72 which act on rollers on arms 48, 50 on the shaft 43. The jaws are mounted in a frame 35 which is slotted at 38 to engage a bar 39, and the frame is given such a movement, by means of crank arms 67 pivoted to arms 40 of the frame, that the jaws 42, 44 travel in the oval path shown by dotted lines, and the jaws remain substantially parallel in successive positions so that they are radial to the oval path in the folding position as shown, but when they deliver the folded sheets to grippers 57 on a cylindrical or other moving carrier 56, the jaws are then tangential to the path. The folded sheets are stripped from the grippers 57 by strippers 73, and are delivered by a belt 82. The jaws 42 are slotted to permit the action of the grippers 57.
