Abstract

11,965. Fell, J. C., [Cottrell & Sons Co., C. B.]. June 8. Folding paper; delivery apparatus.-Relates to gripper folding-cylinders for folding a web or sheet transversely, and delivering the folded sheet without the additional crease or fold due to the radial position of the usual folding-grippers. The grippers consist of jaws 12, 13, the latter being mounted on a shaft 11 journalled in bearings forming part of the jaw 12. The jaw 12 is carried by arms pivoted at 9 in plates 6 fixed to the ends of the cylinder or carrier 1. The pivots 9 are at or about the periphery of the cylinder 1, so that the grippers may swing about them in the recess 4 in the cylinder, the ends of the shaft 11 moving in curved slots 7 in the plates 6. The grippers are swung by a fixed cam 16 operating an arm 14 projecting from one of the pivots 9. The sheet or web 40 is folded into the grippers when the adjacent nipping-faces of the jaws are radial to the cylinder 1, as shown in Fig. 1, and as the cylinder rotates the grippers are turned on their pivots 9 until their gripping-faces, with the part of the sheet gripped between them, come into a position substantially tangeutial to the periphery of the cylinder 1, as shown in Fig. 9. The gripped part of the sheet is thus brought into line with the rest of the sheet, and it is then released and delivered by the rollers 26, 27 and tapes 28 or other delivery mechanism. The grippers are then turned until they are again in radial position to receive a fresh sheet. The shaft 11 is operated to open and close the gripper jaw 13 by a crank arm 23 and cam 25, Fig. 9. The gripper 13 tends to close through the pressure of a spring on a rod 19 connected to an arm 20 on the shaft 11. The folding-blade 36 is pivoted in a recess 31 in the cylinder 29, and is operated to swing in a similar manner to the grippers, by an arm 37 and cam 59, so as to remain parallel to the gripping-faces as it is withdrawn from between them.
