Abstract
2059. Lake, H. W., [Goss Printing Press Co.]. Jan. 25. Folding paper.-A machine for folding sheets of paper or the like, of the kind in which the sheets are fed over a folding-blade whereby they are tucked into travelling jaws which carry them away and are opened to deliver the folded product, is so constructed that the folding-jaws are normally stationary relatively to their carrier but are moved relatively thereto during the folding operation by a movable guide or cam. The jaws are normally maintained by a fixed cam member so as to point in the direction of travel prior to the folding operation, and are moved through two right-angles by a moving cam member so as to point in the opposite direction, the sheet trailing after its folded edge. As shown, the sheets are fed over a support 1 fitted with a fixed blade 3, and they are registered by a front stop (not shown). The sheets are fed in a direction parallel to the shaft 5 of a cylinder 4 which carries the folding- jaws 6, so that longitudinal folds are formed in the sheets. The jaws 6 comprise a fixed member 7 secured by screws to a tubular shaft 9 mounted in the cylinder 4 and fitted with an arm 24 fitted with rollers 25, 26, which are normally engaged by fixed guides 27, 28 and keep the jaws stationary relatively to the cylinder 4. The other jaw member 8 is fixed to a shaft 12 which can rotate in the shaft 9, and is normally pressed by a spring 14 against the jaw 7. Prior to the folding operation, the jaws 7, 8 point in the direction of travel, and during the folding operation they are rotated by the engagement of the roller 26 with one of the cam slots 31, 32, 33 in a rotating member 30, and the jaws are moved to the positions shown in Figs. 5 and 7 to co-operate with the blade 3 to form the fold. From the position shown in Fig. 7, the jaws rotate so as to point in a direction opposite to the motion of the cylinder 4, and then they trail the sheet until a fixed cam 20 acts on a roller 19 on an arm 18 fixed to the shaft 12, so as to open the grippers and allow the folded sheet to be delivered by bands 40, 42. The bands 40 assist in carrying the sheets from the folding to delivery positions. The jaw 8 may be positively opened during the folding operation if desired. As shown, folding takes place during alternate revolutions of the cylinder 4, but two sets of jaws may be carried by the cylinder, or two cams 30 may be used, to ensure one folding operation for each rotation of the cylinder. Or, as shown in Fig. 12, the same effect can be obtained by the use of two sets of gripping-jaws comprising fixed members 51, 57 on a tubular shaft 50, and spring- controlled movable members 52, 56 on a shaft 60, the shafts 50, 60 being controlled similarly to the shafts 9, 12 respectively. As shown in Fig. 14, the folding-blade 3 is pivoted and is controlled by a spring 83.
