2911. King, J. A. Feb. 5. Reinfored blockwork girders and columns are formed of rolled metal joists surrounded wholly or partly by concrete or other fire-proof blocks. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the blocks a are grooved to engage the flanges, and cover the greater part of the web ; they are reinforced by bars d, e, the former being bent over the top flange. The ceiling-slabs h and concrete floor j are supported by the blocks a, and the joints between the blocks and joists are grouted with cement. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the blocks a<1> are saddle-shaped, and are closed by bevelled slabs a<2> after being placed over the joists. The interior is filled with concrete applied through openings a<5>; longitudinal bars may be embedded in the concrete, and the joists b, B cleated or otherwise connected. The column blocks may be applied from alternate sides so as to form a bond. The girder may rest on a bracket on a column formed of solid blocks and rods.
