Abstract

1321. Petermann, O. Sept. 22, 1909. Carriage-shift mechanism and shift-key actions, particularly for the folding typewriter described in Specification 21,654/09, wherein the papercarriage is pivoted to a support 20, and may be folded over the keyboard. The support consists of side-bars 20, Fig. 1, formed on slides 18, which are connected to arms secured to a rock-shaft 17, one of the arms being extended to form a 'figure' shift lever 16. The capital' shift lever 28 is arranged at the side of the machme close to the lever 16, and is loosely mounted on the shaft 17 and formed with a slot 32, which is engaged by a stud 30 on the lever 16. The lever 16 is provided with a pm 24, which is adjustably held in a lug 23 by nuts 25 and is adapted to enter an aperture 26 in the slide support 19. The aperture may be covered by a pivoted plate 35, which is swung inwards against the tension of a spring 36 by the cammed end of the lever 28. When the 'figure' lever is depressed, the carriage is lifted to the full height, the pin 24 entering the aperture 26. When the ' capital' lever is depressed, there is lost-motion with the ' figure' lever 16, and the plate 35 is swung over the aperture, and, on further movement of the capital' lever, the ' figure ' lever is carried therewith until the pin 25 strikes the plate 35 and stops the carriage in the intermediate position. The carriage is counterbalanced by a spring 48, Fig. 3, arranged between the frame and an adjusting-screw 49, which is carried by an arm 50 on the shaft 17. Key-locks.-The carriage may be locked in either of the shift positions by means of a member 45, Fig. 1. which is formed with lugs 46, 47 adapted to enter slots 40, 42 in the levers 28, 16. In the form shown, the locking-member 43 consists of a lever which is limited in its movements by lugs 44 adapted to engage a flange 45 on the frame.
