Abstract

Commutators. - In commutators for dynamo-electric machines, the main insulating material is omitted between the segments for any desired axial length and to a radial depth corresponding to the wear of the segments, and the insulation between these parts is obtained by varnishing, enamelling, or painting the sides of the segments, or by pasting or gluing insulatingÀmaterial to the sides as shown in Fig. 2. The insulation of the segments may be effected by dipping the built-up commutator into insulating-liquid, or by insulating the segments separately before building up the commutator. In a modification the insulating-material may consist of thin plates or sheets of paper, mica, or other suitable material laid loosely between the segments and connected at their insides with the main insulation.
