Abstract

26,479. Kidder, W. P. Nov. 15. Line-spacing mechanism.-The pawl 14 is pivoted on the spacing-lever 11, and is provided with a tail 16, which engages a fixed friction-surface 15. The pawl is normally free from the ratchet-wheel 6, but, when the lever is swung, the surface 15 causes a drag on the pawl, and tilts it into engagement with the wheel. Further movement of the lever causes the pawl to rotate the wheel, the movement being arrested by the curved end of the pawl engaging a fixed cam-stop 17. Further pressure on the lever then returns the carriage. When the lever is released, it is returned by a spring 25, and, during the initial movement, the pawl is swung clear by the surface 15 so that the pawl returns without clicking. The line-spacing is regulated by a stop 19 having steps 20 adapted to engage the tail 16 and thereby determine the point of initial engagement of the pawl and the wheel. The stop is pivoted on a stud 21 and may be adjusted by a knob 22 and looked by a pin 23 engaging cups 24. The adjustment of the stop determines the step which is to be engaged by the tail 16 when the pawl returns to normal position. The outward swing of the pawl is limited by the engagement of a nose 26 with the frame 2.
